AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP.
FIRST OF THE SEMI-FINALS.
An enthusiastic gathering watched the first of the semi-finals for the Now Zealand amateur billiard championship, E. V. Roberts, title holder, v. Hancock, at the Auckland Sports Club Rooms, His Majesty's Arcade, on Saturday evening. Roberts was in specially good form, the ease and accuracy of his scoring strokes being much admired, and his exploitation of the "red ball" was invested with a crispness and speed that deprived the stroke of .any monotony. Hancock, though oat-matched, made many good individual strokes. He was defeated by 199 points. Roberts made breaks of 89, 50, 48, 41, 34, 33, 27, 24, 23, 21 and 20. Hancock's best breaks wore 30, 24, 22, 22, 21 and 20. This evening, commencing at 7.30, the second semi-final will be played between R. Fredatovich and F. Oswald, and the winner will play Roberts in the first session of the final game of 2000 up, commencing to-morro\v evening.
