LEVEL CROSSING DANGER.
THE HIKURANGI LINE.
DEVIATION SUGGESTED.
fBT TELEGKAPH. —OWST CORRESPONDENT.] WHANGAREI. Saturday. Following upon the recent destruction of a tractor by a passing train at McLeod's Crossing, near Hikurangi, the Hikurangi of Commerce suggested to the Whangarei County Council that the risk at two crossings could be done away with by "deviating the main road so that it would pass under the line. It was asked that effect be given to the suggestion when the reconstruction of the northern highways was* taken in hand. The spot had been inspected by the county chairman, Mr. W. * Jones, who stated that the proposed route would mean that the road would possibly be on the flood level, while the deviation would be through valuable land, and further, would affect some houses. To give effect to the proposal would involve a considerable undertaking. After discussion it was decided to reply that further investigation would be made, but that the present opinion of the councii was that the proposed deviation was impracticable.
