PRIZES AT SCHOOL.
MINISTER OPPOSES SYSTEM.
That public money can be used to greater advantage than by spending it on school prizes is the opinion held by the Minister for Education," the Hon. C. J. Parr, according to a circular which is being distributed by the director of education among all secondary schools. It was often contended, the circular adds, that the prizes were awarded not for industry and application, but for natural ability, and therefore they had a tendency to discourage those who were hard workers and yet not naturally clever. That the allocating of prizes at the end of the year was a. considerable burden to the teacher was pointed out as another matter to be considered as an argument against the giving of prizes. This circular was the subject of some discussion at a meeting of the New Plymouth High Schools' Board of Governors on Monday evening. It was decided to take no action until the visit of the director of education to Taranaki.
