GRAMMAR SCHOOL DESKS.
THE QUESTION OF COST. DEPARTMENT LIMITS PAYMENT. The Auckland Grammar Schools Board of Governors met yesterday, Professor A. P. W. Thomas presiding. The furnishing of the Mount Albert Grammar' School was discussed, it being stated that the board had paid £3 17s 64 for each desk, while the Education Department contributed only £3, contending that the amount was ample. It was asked to what degree the department was able to control the expenditure of the board. Over £40,000 had been spent on the erection of the school, and surely it would have been incongruous if cheap desks had been provided. Moreover, the board's discretion had never before been questioned. „ It was decided to obtain legal advice on the matter. The board decided to send a letter of appreciation to the Auckland Rugby Union "for its donation of £60 toward the improvement of the school playgrounds. A further £25 had been collected from the boys in regular penny contributions. With the Government subsidy of £75, a total of £150 was thus available.
