[bx TELEGRAPH.—OWN correspondent.] HAMILTON. Saturday. The Rugby match between Auckland and Waikalo to-day attracted a crowd of nearly j * splendid game had been looked forward to. Auckland, however, had followed tne old tradition of taking Waikato cheaply and Bent down a second-class team. The Auckland team were lucky in winning and their luck was further enhanced by having a lowering sun in the last spell. If the Auckland Union sends down such teams cs it has sent for the last few years, it will fend that the country districts will make Auckland a position in r.hield matches very precarious. The game was not at all gratifying, and although it was played under conditions as near ideal as possible, was weak in all departments. Kicking, tackling, passing and serum work were at times feeble and Auckland's win was due to nothing but good fortune. The ground was dry and fast. Tho teams were:— _Auckland. —O'Brien, Loft, Kirwan, Tonic m, K. ffwersen, Olsen. McManus, Anderson, Peters, Lomas, McLean, Webber, McWilliam, Keary. Fogarty. Waikato.—Malloy, C. Thompson. A. Thompson. Beaver, Kemp, Johnston. Buckingham, Peake, Hooper, Warren. W. ChrisCourtney, D. Bourke. Carter, Delaney. Waikato kicked off against the sun and Auckland immediately got a penalty. Buckingham secured and ,set his backs going but Lomas relieved Peake saved with a low kick when Auckland were threatening near 'Waikato's lino. _ Kirwan intercepted a passing rush by Waikato when they were threatening strongly and changed tho scene of action with a long kick. The Waikato backs got going well several times but Peters at last got away, only to lose the ball when a try was within easy reach. O'Brien started a pretty movement with Kirwan and Loft backing up well, but Beaver intercepted and kioked out. Auckland were awarded a free kiok for offside play, but Ifwersen missed. From tight play almost on Auckland's line, Kirwan relieved and changed play to half-way. Olsen. Kirwan and Loft_ got going, but the last-named missed his pass ana the ball bounced out. The first spell ended with Auckland threatening dangerously. Courtney secured from a line-out on resuming and passed to Christie and D. Bourke got a try at the end of a splendid effort. Johnston converted. Waikato, 5; Auckland, 0. Courtney secured from a line-out in the Auckland twenty-five, and Buckingham ran across and put out a long kick which gained a lot of ground. Waikato were awarded a penalty, but Johnston's effort failed. MoWilliam secured from the ruck in Waikato territory and passed to Peters who jostled his way across. Ifwersen failed. Waikato, 5; Auckland. 3. McLean. McWilliams, and Tonkin got going well, but Tonkin was tackled in the corner within inches of scoring. _ Auckland opened up and begun to get Waikato bustled when tho bell sounded for half-time. The second half saw the Auckland backs getting: to work hard, but Kemp intercepted and breaking through cleverly spoilt a good chance by kicking when he had only the fullbaok to beat, Malloy secured from ensuing play and had a fruitless attempt at a pot from the field. McManus secured from a scrum .and Ifwersen set his backs going dangerously but Kirwan was dragged out. Ifwersen and Olsen broke away and came very near a score, but Waikato's defence proved too solid and Kirwan was carried out. Beaver was injured at this stage and had to ro off, a'nd was replaced by Quinn. On resuming Ifwersen took a beautiful mark right in front of tho Waikato goal and put over a good kick. Auckland, 6; Waikato. 6. Kirwan began a nippy rush by_ the_ backs with Olsen and Ifwersen. participating, but Auckland were pulled up for a forward pass. Auckland were penalised for obstruction but Johnston missed an easy kiok. In the last spell. Loft began with a pretty movement, but vras pulled up for a knock-on. Peake and C Thompson combined nicely and carried play down into the Auckland corner and Wnikato held the play there effectively until Olaon forced. Kemp broke away in great style and beat several opponents but came to grief for want of backing up. A long cross kick from Ifwersen set the backs in motion and Olsen securing passed to Kirwan who was tackled in the corner. A free kick brought relief to Waikato, but they wore penalised a minute afterwards and Ifwersen put over a sensational kick almost from half-way. Auckland, 9; Waikato, 5. Tonkin was penalised for picking the ball out but Johnston missed from an easy position. Auckland's backs were now putting in some fast and clever work and were being given chances from Waikato's mistakes. Waikato transferred into ' the Auckland twenty-five but Olsen secured ■ from a scrum on the line and passed to McManus, who passed to Ifwersen, who came down at a great pace. Ifwersen had a shot but missed and tho same ended with the score unaltered. REPRESENTATIVE GAME. CANTERBURY BEATS OTAGO. fBX TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, Saturday.
