MELBOURNE HORRIFIED

-SEARCH FOR CRIMINAL.

WHOLE' COMMUNITY ASSISTING.

Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. CRecd. 10.35 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Aug. 4.

The city is horrified at the murder of the child Irene Tuckerman, which has so many features in common with t'he Gun Alley tragedy. The whole community is endeavouring to assist the police in their search for the perpetrator of the .deed.

Further police investigations have disclosed that the murdered girl was seen during the morning in the neighbourhood of her home with a man. It is believed that the child was enticed to some stable or house not far from her home and tiiere strangled in order to stop her protesting cries.

The chief of police ia of the opinion that the crime was committed by a sexual maniac, and that it will not be long beforo he is arrested.

The whole of the CaulfieJd district was in a state of terror to-day. Children were either driven to school in motor-cars or taken there by their terrified parents.

Exhaustivo efforts by the jjolice to trace the murderer have so far proved fruitless.
