POWER FOR THE CITY.

ACTIVITIES OF THE BOA"RD.

' ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT.

BATTERY AND CONVERTER,

Tho purchase of additional equipment bos ting about £6000 was authorised at the meeting o! tho Auckland Electric Power Board yesterday, M»» W„ J. Holdsworth presiding.

The general manager, Mr. A. Wyllie, recommended the purchase of a new battery, of smallsr capacity than the old one, which would serve for emergency purposes, for auxiliary supply in the power station itself, and also for important work in testing. The cost would bo about £3000.

Mr. Wyllie also recommended the addition of a further rotary converter for traction supply at Kingsland, over and above the mattprs recently put forward by the Tramway Department. The object of the addition v,-a3 to meet heavy traffic for football and other occasions, as well as the demand for the new line on the Edcndale Road and at Point Chevalier. There was plenty of room in the Kingsland sub-station for the addition, which would give ample capacity for tho district. The cost would be about £3200.

The board decided to call for tenders for tho battery and tho converter. The general manager stated that the question of alterations to the Newmarket fiu& statioEi was being considered. The erection of the Penrose sub-station by tho Public Works Department was mentioned in a letter received from tho district electrical engineer, Hamilton. It was stated that plans and specifications for the station wore completed, and it was intended to start building .13 soon ft- possible. The board was concerned with tho switch room at the station, and it was suggested that tho board should pay rental at- the rate of eight per cent, oi eight-ninths of the cost of the room. Tho board decided to agree to the sugg rental. The chairman remarked that it would be a huge pity to give the department an opportunity to delay the work.

The •" Mount Albert Borough Council wrote asking when the supply would be available in New North Koad between the Morningsiide railway station and the Oakley bridge, the borough boundary. The general manager reported that a high tension line was right through the district, and the low tension lines were balng advanced considerably,, He hoped to get on with the work quickly, and the supply would bo available in a few months.

With reference to the petition for reticulation in Boundary Road, the general manager stated that considerable ® regrading had to be done. If a line was Jmfc up, it would be only fair that the ocal authorities should bear the cost of any alteration to the poles afterwards required. If that was agreed to, the work would be proceeded with very soon. The roport was adopted. A special committee's report on the question of staff reorganisation was referred back, the chairman remarking that one or two other matters had to be considered.
