Four persons were killed and 29 others. were injured through a railway collision at the Haymarket station, Edinburgh. . The accident was caused through an incoming train running into a stationary train. Four of the carriages on the latter were telescoped.
The victims were mostly. women and girls, members of a Polytechnic holiday party from London, Oxford and' Manchester. They had been residing temporarily at a hostel in Edinburgh, and had been on an excursion to Saint Andrews.
The excursionists had just transferred into a stationary suburban train when the accident occurred.
Seventy-five minutes elapsed before the last of the injured passengers could be extricated from the telescoped carriages. Every movement of the structures ■ with the crowbars evoked groans from those who were pinned beneath the wreckage. Doctors succoured the imprisoned people with brandy -while the rescuers were smashing the woodwork.
