THREE MONTHS' IN GAOL. MAINTENANCE ORDER IGNORED. Three months' imprisonment was imposed on Joseph aged 135, by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Court yesterday, for having failed to observe the conditions of a maintenance order in respect of his wife and three children. Mr. Schramm, who appeared for the wife, stated that the order had been made last month, and defendant was now £6 2s in arrears. For 18 month;) previously defendant had'not contributed 6ne penny toward the maintenance of his dependants. "He has a brand-new pair of boots on, which must have cost about £2, Your Worship," observed Mr. Schramm. Defendant said it had been a fortnight before he got work after the order was made, and ho -was now working on a farm.

Mr. Schramm: When you were before the Court last time you said you were expecting money from the South; what did you do with that? Defendant; Well, I had to keep myself.

Mr. Hunt: While your wife and children starved.

OBSTRUCTED A CONSTABLE. Charged with having obstructed Constable Cavaye, William King, aged 37, was fined £5, in default 14 days' imprisonment. The constable stated that accused interfered when he was arresting a drunken man, witiji the result that the latter got away. Senior-Sergeant Rawle mentioned that accused had 28 previous convictions. CHARGE OP ASSAULT. As the result of an argument in the kitchen of a Hobson Street boarding house on Saturdays Ernest Lind, aged 46, was charged -with having assaulted William Dobson. William Dobson; 'who had two badly discoloured eyes, sta,ted that accused entered the house about 6.45 p.m. and attacked a boy." Ho then threatened to kill the boy , with a sticky and after a few heated .words accused cornered witness in a coat shed. TMfcwas all witness remembered; and when ho regained consciousness He had M;wo black eyes, a swollen jaw, and some loose front teeth. There was no reason for the attack. Accused alfeged that he' had treated witness to drinks eajrlier in the day, and that witness had pocketed the change. On accused's application the case was adjourned until to-day, to enable him to call witnesses to show that Dobson had been the aggrcsisor. AN INDECENT ACT. George Harrison, aged 57, was fined £2, or 14 days' imprisonment, for having committed a grossly indecent act in. Elliott Street on Saturday.. ALLEGED BURGLARY AT PAEROA. A charge that on ' July 16,' at Paeroa, they broke and entered the shop of David McWhatters and stole two suits of clothes, hats, overcoats, towels, under- ■ pants, a rug, and s> quantity of fhirts, collars, soxs, ties, and handkerchiefs, was preferred against John Grattin Robinson,; aged 42, and John William Graham, aged 44. It is stated that both men have been endeavouring to dispose of the goods iu Auckland. They were further charged with having been drunk on Saturday, and were each fined ss, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. On the theft charge they were remanded until August 4. ALLEGED ILLEGAL GAME Charles Ingersoll Dennis, aged 38 (Mr. Schramm), was remanded to appear at Hamilton on Augusti 1 on a charge of being a rogue and vagabond, in that he played with instruments of gaming in Te Rqpa
