LONDON. July 28.

The fourth test cricket match, England v. Booth Africa commenced to-day at Manchester in drill and threatening weather. The wicket was soft. The South Africans won the toss and batted first. They had made 116 for four wickets when heavy rain caused the abandonment of the match for the day. Ernest Tyldesley was omitted from the English side and Hands replaced Dixon. The match opened in four instalments of play,, lasting respectively 45m., 57m., 27m., and 40m. r between 11.30 a.m. and 4 p.m.. when the rain finally settled matters i'or tha day. Afterwards the sun shone gloriously. The abandonment disturbed a section of the spectators, numbering over 1000. They inspected the pitchi and then moved to the pavilion, "where Hornby, Bearley, and others reasoned with them and got them to disperse.

South Africa's ncore was a good beginning in the circumstances. The wicket was slow and rain-spoiled to a degree, but it did not become really diffic&lt, and in a measure rather handicapped the bowlers. Ward played masterly defensive cricket. He might have been caught when he had made 22. but it was a hard catch. Nourse played attractive cricket, but gave a chance when he wa3 seven. Altogether with the stoppages thero were 16 bowling spells and 67 overs. J. W. H. T. Douglas captains the English team. Gilligan announced yesterday that acting under his doctor's orders he would not play in the match. Ho is suffering from a severe blow over the heart from a delivery by Pearson in the Gentlemen v. Players match at tho Oval early in the month. Following are ths details of the score:— SOUTH AFRICA—First Innings. Commaille, lbw b Tate ... .... «8 Ward, b Tate .. .. 50 Susskind, lbw b R.
