RAILWAY FACILITIES.

AUCKLAND TRAFFIC

NEEDS.

NEW SUBURBAN STATIONS.

EXPANSION NORTH AND SOUTH.

SETTLERS BEAR SHARE OF COST.

New suburban railway stations to meet the great increase in Auckland passenger and goods traffic have been planned for early construction. One is to be built midway between Papatoetoe station arid Win, on tho main south line, and the other at 'the highest point of the gradient beyond Henderson, onthe noi'th line. The estimated expenditure is about £10,(KX), part of which has to be provided by the residents of the localities particularly concerned.

Proposals in regard to the new stations have been approved by tlfe* Government and negotiations between the department and pstitioners in each locality ar« very near finality.

The erection of a new station on the south line has been asked for as a result of the rapid settlement in tho outer suburban area, several petitions'having been presented to tho Government. After negotiations with the Minister for Public Works, the Hon. J. G. Coates, the petitioners, for whom Mr. E. A. Price, was acting, were advised that if they were prepared to make a gift of the necessary land and make a cash contribution of £1600 tho department would erect a station. These conditions the residents have now decided to meet, and it is anticipated that the money will shortly be subscribed. The scheme prepared by the department, which it is expected will be put in hand without delay, involves the erection of a fully equipped station at a cost of approximately £8000 and the deviation of the Puhi Nui Road, thu3 eliminating a dangerous crossing. The deviation of the road will extend to about five chains to cross the railway lina by a traffic bridge at the deepest part of a cutting on tho northern side of the crossing. The Orphan Home Trust Board will give the necessary land for the western section of the road, while other land owners have agreed to give the land required for the station. It is anticipated that the new station will promote subdivision of a large area suitable for residential settlement. As regards the .Henderson scheme, which will necessitate an expenditure of £1700, of which £700 will be subscribed by residents, it js recommended that the new station with sidings be erected midway between Henderson and Swanson. The department's proposals are being considered by the residents. - ; j?
