Unusual circumstances were revealed in a case heard before: Mr. H. A. Young, S-M-V » to-day when Thomas Claude Mayes (Mrl ' W. J. King), was charged with obtaining £10 by means of false pretences by representing to Eric Payne that he had to pay the amount in settlement 'of a claim for" damages in connection with a collision. Evidence was given that a motor-van in charge of Mayes and driven by Payne col/ lided with a vehicle owned and driven by B. M. Barlow,; a Motumaoho farmer. It was admitted that Mayes should have been driving the van at the time and Mayes and Payne agreed to,share the cost of the , damage, estimated at £20. Payne gave Mayes £10 which Payne alleged Mayes re- ' presented was to me«i his (Mayes ) ccintribution. Payne admitted that he had i laid information against Mayes because a I relative named Smith had a grudge against • ! Mayes. For the defence it was claimed that j Mayes had agreed to pay £10 to Barlow; and that this money had been obtained to meet the claim when it was made. There was no false representation. The magistrate dismissed the information. : . ';..
