UHCONQUERED EVEREST

NORTON'S FINAL DESPATCH. OXYGEN THE CRUCIAL NEED. Sun. DELHI. July 15 Colonel E. S. Norton, leader of the Everest expedition, in a final despatch discusses some of the reasons for the failure of the attempt to climb the mountain. He cays:— "The thing that really mattered was the lack of oxygen. This not merely made itself felt when we were walking up hill; it permeated and dominated every minute of the climber's life and sapped all his energy. The effects of exertion and altitude were increased consistently right to the top of the mountain. All determination and will to conquer were seriously weakened. "The rapid intake of breath caused desiccation of the whole bodily system, accctinpa/nied by. intense depression of spirits." Colonel Norton adds: "The monsoon season definitely set in, and the expedition shot its bolt. Members are recuperating in a sheltered valley, from which they will return to Darjeeling."
