NEWMARKET BOROUGH.

KHYSER PASS OVERBRIDGE, CONCRETING OF KING STREET. The Newmarket Borough Council met last evening, those present being the' Mayor, Mr. G. and Messrs. P. S. Boone, H. G, Cooper, W. T. Sawbridge, L, Kelteway, A. B. ; Kent, G. Smerdon. T, J. Watts and A., R. Sec-' combe. The matter of repairs to the Khyber Pass overbridge was dealt with in a 'fetter from the district railways engineer, who stated that investigations were being made to see whether the bridge would stand temporary repairs to carry on for another 12 months, so that the cost of renewal might bo included in the council's 1925 estimates. v-/ The council adopted a recommendation by the Legal and Finance Committee that a local Empowering Bill be submitted to Parliament during the present session, to empower the council to lease portions of the" new municipal building without complying with the provisions of the Municipal Corporations Act ; to validate the expenditure in connection with the official opening of the new municipal building; and to authorise the payment of £100 aa a donation toward the Auckland War Memorial Museum. The activities* of the Newmarket Yolun- j teerFire Brigade during the past year i were dealt with in a report presented by the captain, Mr. T. J. Watts. The brigade had attended 13 fires, which, with Cb.o exception of that of Newmarket School, were not of a serious nature, the promptitude of the brigade havftig prevented them gaining a hold. An unusual feature was that most of the xifea occurred during th© daytime. The purchase of an extension ladder and hand-pump wa< recommended, in view of the increase of two-storeyed buildings.
