PROHIBITION OF ONIONS.
Sir,—-There appears to be a tendency to blame the Government and officers of the Stock Department for their assiduity in preventing tbe introduction of diseases. I am a produce broker, and have sold a quantity of California!! onions on which I will lose my commission and out-of-pr><;ket expenses' for cables if the embargo is imposed. Up till the year 1900 I was a farmer in Queensland and had practical experience of the losses &nd disijk>;s caused by the ravages of redwater, or Texas fever, the infection of which was carried by the ticks. Foot and mouth disease is different, and there is no occasion for panic, bat it would be better for the people of New Zealand if they never ate another onion rather than that the herds of the country should bo decimated by such a scourge- if it can be prevented.
