HOCKEY TOURNAMENT.

WHITE HORSE CUP MATCHES.

WAIPA DEFEAT RODNEY.

PIAKO AND FRANKLIN DRAW.

The White Horse Cup Hockey Tournament was continued yesterday at the Remuera Grounds. Two of the three game 3 were strenuously contested, though the standard of play was somewhat spoiled by misdirected and hard hitting, a fault which seems to be common to all country team 3. The principal match was between Waipa and Rodney. This was an exciting game, in which Waipa gave the better exhibition. This team is now leading in the competition. The games resulted:— Waipa, 3, beat Rodney, 1. Piako, 2, drew with Franklin, 2. Whangarei, 7, beat Thames, 0. The positions of the teams are:—Waipa, 4 points; Franklin, 3; Rodney, 2; Whangarei, 2; Piako, 1; Thames, 0. A Hard-fought Match. That tho Waipa-Rodney match would be a strenuous one was apparent from the outset, and each side attacked vigorously. The Waipa forwards were being well supported by their backs and held the upper hand. A breakaway by Rodney ended at the Waipa fullbacks, where work was of a high order. A good centre from the right gave a chance to Speirs, who made no mistake with the snot. .The pace was well maintained, but the hitting was for the most part indiscriminate. Thus the backs on both sides failed to give their forwards adequate openings. On the forwards' part, moreover, there was a predominance of individual effort on the "hit and run" system. Rodney were dangerous on resuming after the spell, but the attack was fruitless. The wing-forwards on both sides were failing to trap the ball owing to the misdirected hitting. Play travelled quickly all over the held, till Waipa got away and Tarr scored. Rodney . then worked play to favourable territory, and Goertz scored. Waipa put the issue beyond all doubt by Civil scoring just before time. An Even Match. Piako were first away, and their forwards held the advantage over Franklin. Each side showed initiative with Piako having somewhat more "of the, play. A ! period of even play followed, but the hitting was too straight and hard for possible scoring. At half-time the score was Itoo in Franklin's favour. During the second spell Franklin scored again, but Piako netted twice, and the game ended in a draw. This was an even game, and both sides tried hard. Many chances were lost by forwards failing to control the fast-moving ball. Whangarei's Improved Form. Slowness in the circle lost Whangarei a couple of chances in the opening stages, and although Thames made a couple of sorties, play was in Whangarei's favour. The ball came down the .left and Hamilton scored. Thames replied with a great rush. The goalkeeper stopped the shot, and another attempt hit the post. Exciting play in the circle ended in Whangaiei clearing. The northern forwards were now showing good combination and improved circle work, and two more goals, scored by Hamilton and Massey, were added in quick succession. The fourth goal came from a hard shot by Hamilton, who scored again a minute later. The Thames players were frequently out of position, while their hitting was not always satisfactory. Whangarei scored twice more through shots by McCullough and Clayton. Thames were clearly outclassed, * though they put up a good fight. LADIES' PROVINCIAL CUP. AUCKLAND DEFEAT WAIKATO. The ladies' matches for the Auckland provincial cup were continued yesterday at Remuera. The Auckland A team had a hard match with Waikato, who put up a great defence. This was the only closely-contested match of the day. King Country A had an unexpectedly easy win over Whangarei. The results are:— Auckland A, 2 (Misses Steele and Lowe) beat Waikato, 0. King Country A, 6 (Misses E. Carlson 3, K. Carlson, 3) * eat Whangarei, 1 (Miss Hill.) King Country B, 6 (Misses G. Eraser 5, R. Fraser) beat Franklin, 0.
