THE APPRENTICES ACT.
CONTRACT REGISTRATION.
THE PROBATIONARY PERIOD.
[BY TELEGKAFH.—OWN COBaESPOKDENT.] TOLLINGTOK Tuesday. Referring to the point of when contracts of apprenticeship under the Apprentices Act should be entered into and registered, at the beginning or the end of the probationary period, the officer in charge of the Wellington branch of the Labour Department, Mr. R. T. Bailey, stated that under the usual apprenticeship provisions this should be doire at the beginning of the probationary period. '
The contract took effect from that time, said Mr. Bailey, and was entered into in the firat instance subject to the right of either party to terminate it before the expiration of the probationary period of any was fixed. It had been the practice hitherto in those cases where indentures had been necessary to withold the filling in and signing of the indentures until the end of the probationary period. This was not in order, as in the interim the relationship of master and apprentice had not existed, and the employer could be held liable for the payment of journeymen's wages unless, of course, there was some specific provision to meet the case in the award or agreement. •
