OBITUARY.

PROFESSOR A. "MARSHALL. A. and N.Z. LONDON. July 14. The death is announced of Professor Alfred Marshall, the noted economist.

The late Professor Marshall was MA. and Hon. D.Sa, Oxford and Cambridge, and Hon. LL.D., Edinburgh and Bristol. He was a Fellow of the British. Academy, Foreign Member or Fellow of the Institute or Academies of France and Sweden, and of Bome, Milan and Turin. He was awarded the Prix Emile de Laveleye of the Belgian Academy in 1921. One of his posts was that of vice-president of the Royal Economic Society. Professor Marshall was born in London on July 26, 1842, and was educated at the Merchant Taylors' School and St. John's College, Cambridge, and St. John's College, Oxford. He was Fellow of the former college from 1865 to 1877, and from 1885 to 1908. He was principal of the University College, Bristol, from 1877 to 1882, lecturer at and Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford, from 1883-1884. Thereafter he was Professor of Political Economy at Cambridge University, 1885 to 1908. In 1891, he' was a member of it-he Royal Commission on Labour. Among his publications were some noteworthy text books. These included "Economics of Industry" (written in conjunction with his wife in 1879), " Principles of Economics," vol. 1., 1890, translated into several languages; "Elements of Economics," vol. 1., 1891, and other volumes on Alliance, trade and industry.

STATE FUNERAL ACCORDED.

Australian and N.Z. Cfcble Association. (Reed. 10.5 p.m.) TOKIO, July 13.

Prince Matsnkata, who died on July 2, aged 84 years, was accorded a State funeral.

The late Prince was one of the Genro or "elder statesmen," who played an important part in the government of old Japan. The " elder statesmen " acted as advisers of the Emperor.

Prince Matsukata was twice the head of the Government, and afterwards held high office at the Imperial Court.
