FRENCH STEAMER SERVICE
MESiSAGERIES MARITIMES.
DOMINION CALL ABANDONED.
The Wellington agents for the Messageries Maritimes, Messrs. Levin and Company, have received news that the French shipping company's service to Wellington is to be discontinued, as it has been found to be unprofitable. The Messageries Maritimes boats will henceforth run from French ports via French West Indies, Panama Canal, Papeete and Suva, substituting the Fijian post for Wellington, en route to Noumea, New Caledonia,
The Messageries Maritimes service from France to this part of the world has been maintained by passenger Iboats, also carrying cargo, including the Antinous (the former German raider Wolf), which has made two calls at Wellington. Tho service has been three-monthly, and since its inauguration five calls huve been made at Wellington. The lack of demand in New Zealand for French manufactured goods has prompted the discontinuation of the call at Wellington. Only a very few passengers have travelled to the Dominion the French boats. The last steamer of the service, the Antinous, called at Wellington about three weeks ago, en route from France to Noumea.
