He was severely wounded in the 1 Somaliland campaign ih 1903, and was decorated by the Italian Government. Alter being promoted to the rank of .captain, he commanded the battleships Majestic, Queen and Superb. Attaining the rank of Bear-Admiral in 1914, he commanded the First Battle Squadron at the Battle of Jutland, and was subsequently Coiamander-in-Chief in the East Indies;'
