INFLUENCE ON TRADE.

SATISFACTORY INDICATIONS. (Eeceived 8.55 p.mj Reater. LONDON. July 7. Asked in the House of Commons by Sir H. Brittain, Conservative member for Acton, if there had been any trade results from the Empire Exhibition, Mr. W. Lurih, Parliamentary Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department, said that inquiries showed that connections wero being established which should result in a large increase in trade. He mentioned the purchases of machinery against Continental competition, orders for steel products, sales of fruit throughout Britain, and numerous inquiries for Dominion produce and manufactures. Mr. Lnnn said that he viewed the exhibition, however, even more as a means of propaganda and publicity, than as a market for immediate sales.

MR. BRUCE JOINS IN PROTEST.

Tho Prime Minister, Mr. S. M. Bruce, has joined in the protests against the proposal to impose the amusement tax on admission to the Empire Exhibition. He contends that this would remove any hope of a surplus from the exhibition.

Speaking at the Sheep Show luncheon to-day, the president said they should have had. a representative with practical Knowledge at the Empire Exhibition to speak for the wool industry. Instead they had Sir Joseph Cook, the High Commissioner, and a George Street jeweller. Both were good fellows, but they were political appointees, who knew absolutely nothing about the pastoral industry. '
