The meeting of the Cambridge Borough Council was presided ' over by the Mayor, Mr. C. •H. ; Priestley. .; • '...■■ The principal business was a notice .of motion by Mr. Mervyn '' Wells, ; "That a committee be set up to bring to/the: further consideration of the Highways Board the pre-emptive need of a ; permanent highway to replace the present unsatisfactory Great South Road,;and that.- this committee b invite the: co-opera-tion of all the South Auckland local bodies." :v.-.\ ■'■■■':....'■ ',:•': mover said that many portions of the road, including the Ranginris,' needed immediate permanent attention. 'There were even worse places en route than the Rangiriris, and he thought that all the local bodies should unite in' an endeavour to get some definite plan regarding this provincial thoroughfare. For some reason the district* had, he said, got little consideration from;.; the board.

Moore and carried unanimously. ■ The shocking state of the present Ham-ilton-Cambridge main, road were referred to. , For many weeks it : has . been practically impassable, all traffic having : to go through, via Matangi or take a v wide detour through Ohaupo. The '■ Mayor stated 'that he had; recently interviewed Mr. Wynyard, ■: representative : on ' the Highways Board, ; regarding f' the f road through the ;>borough, ■}■ but '• had got.-very little encouragement, being told that ;it would : be f necessary; to! prove ••, that;. the ; bulk of the through traffic went over the road before .assistance' could be given.' : '•'•' The council resolved to make', application to the Highways Board to take over the Karapiro bridge on the outskirts ofi the,borough.
