FRENCH GOVERNMENT.
VOTE OF CONFIDENCE. A. and N.Z. PARIS. Juno 20. Prior to the departure for London of the Premier, M. Herriot, .the. Chamber ~of Deputies passed a vote of confidence in the Government by 313 votes to 234. . The Socialist attitude to the Govern-' ment was defined in a statement made by M. Paul Faure ;in the Chamber. This was. to the effect that, the Socialists retain their independence, but will support the Government as long as the latter remains true to its'own principles. M. Herriot foreshadowed stringent financial retrenchment and a rigorous collection of income tax. He said that at present there was no question of a capital levy. .'•'.A. supporter '.' of M. ' Poincare—M. de Selves, formerly Minister for the Interior —was elected President' of the Senate by 151 votes to' 127 polled by M. Herriot's candidate, M. Bienvennartin.' ;.. ; '.
