GARAGES NEAR HOUSES.
PROPOSED RESTRICTIONS. PROHIBITION OF WOOD. Two pages- of the Forestry Department's recommendations to the Timber Conservation Conference regarding motor garages combined with dwellings were deleted by committee " C." of the Timber Conference, held in Wellington last week in favour of the following recommendation:— " Garages attached to or constructed underneath dwellings or within 6ft. : ; of the buildings, shall be entirely constructed of concrete or brick, no openings to be allowed between the garage and the dwellings, no pit to be allowed in th e garage for any purpose."' The. view was expressed that a garage without a pit was useless, but Mr. A. J. Paterson / said that . pits were excluded because of the dangers of collected fumes there, ic.. He had known : a driver to be found in a helpless condition in a pit from the collected exhaust fumes.
<';':'-<, The question of ventilation of pits was discussed, and in view of many protests the prohibition [of pits was withdrawn, it being stated that insurance companies make no extra , rate for garages. v Several protests were made against the prohibition of wood, but it was stated that the Wellington City Council had amended its by-law by stipulating brick or concrete. The committee's recommendation as amended was carried.
