EXODUS FROM GERMANY.
INCREASING EMIGRATION,
OVER 100,000 LAST YEAR.
' Emigration from Germany is. now proceeding at a rata unparalleled since the early 'eighties. The 1923-4 quota of 67,607 German, emigrants to tae Unue 'States was completed about the middle of December last. On July 1 the quota for 1924-25 begins, and. all ships from shortly before that date till the end of August are booked up. . ■ For the five-year period, 188.1-85, the yearly average number of emigrants was 170 000. The figure rapidly decreased till' in the three years before the war vea'r of 1914, the 12-monthly average was onlv 22,360. , , During the war the number of persons who left Germany to settle abroad was, naturally, small. It w;is nine in 1817. But after 1919 the figures began to increase rapidly again Up to date they are-1919. 3230; 1920, 8450; 1921, 23,450 1922, 36,500 1923, 115,400. Before the war North America was the favourite field for those who - left the Fatherland to seek their fortunes abroad. Now Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and even Mexico are the countries attracting most German emigrants.
