MENTAL DEFECTIVES.
COMMITTEE OF INQUIRY.
SITTINGS IN AUCKLAND.
The committee appointed by the Department of Health to inquire into the question of mental defectives and sexual offenders will take evidence in Auckland on Wednesday and Thursday. The Hon. W. H. Triggs, M.L.C., is chairman of the committee, and the other members are: Dr. A. G. Paterson, Director of the Division of School Hygiene; Sir Donald McGavin, DirectorGeneral of Medical Services; Dr. J. S. Elliott, of Wellington; Dr. F. Truby King, Director of the Division of Child Welfare; Mr. C. E. Matthews, UnderSecretary of Justice and ControllerGeneral of Prisons; and Mr. J. Beck, officer-in-charge of the Special School Branch of the Education Department. The order of reference is as follows: " To inquire and report as to tho necessity for special care and treatment of the feeble-minded and sub-normal and to propose the general means by which such care and treatment, if any, should ' be provided. To inquire and report as to the necessity for the treatment of mental degenerates and persons charged with sexual offences and to recommend forms of treatment for the various types of cases." The sittings will be held in the Auckland Hospital Board's rooms in Kitchener Street, commencing at 10 o'clock each morning. The inquiry will be open to the public.
