THE YALE TELESCOPE.
• Auckland is not to have the Yale telescope; if the Mayor is correct in his assumption, the 26-inch refractor which the University wishes to establish somewhere in the Southern Hemisphere will go to South Africa. It has to be remembered,' however, that the Union Government is itself installing an instrument of this aperture at Johannesburg. The telescope has been on order for some time with a British firm. Therefore, it may be expected that Yale will not send another to the same vicinity if any reasonable alternative offers. Tha astronomical authorities the world over endeavour to avoid duplication. Therefore, though Auckland's attempt to secure the instrument for New Zealand has not succeeded, there is no reason why other efforts should not be made. Much was heard some months ago ' about the superior conditions in the] South. If there be any real desire on the part of the people there to see the telescope installed in New Zealand, here is their opportunity." Auckland has at least shown what amount of co-operation is needed to interest the Yale ' authorities.. Let a similar offer be made, and if the superiority of conditions be as great as was claimed by Otago, there is no reason why the Yale telescope should not eventually search the heavens' from some site in New Zealand.
