NOTES AND COMMENTS.

PLAYERS FROM SQUADRON.

Local players have enjoyed games with the officers of the fleet this week on the courts of Messrs. H. Q. Thomson, F. W. Wilson and J Stanton, . Mountain Road, Epsom. There are several players of high standard in the squadron, but most are short of practice. The outstanding player is Engineer Lieutenant-Commander Carr, of H.M.S. Adelaide. He is a eon of Mr. T. P. Carr. well known in Sydney tennis circles, and a brother of Carr the noted sprinter. He has represented New South Wales against Queensland. The match, Navy v. Auckland representatives, produced . some good tennis. The Navy team was weakened by the absence of some of its best players at Rotorua, and to connterect this the Auckland team was weakened in its combination of the players in the doubles: Auckland won six out of the eeven matches, with one drawn. Many of the contests were very even,' despite the score. The one won 'by the Navy, in which Engineer Lieutenant-Commander Carr and Midshinman McKinnon were matched against H. L. Eobson and V. Johns, showed glimpses of darkling tennis, Carr's play was quite equal to New Zealand champinshiop standard. ,Ho is sound all round, and is a finished player. The first tear% to represent New Zealand in Davis Cup matches will consist of F. M. B. Fwher, J. C. Peach and Dr. Allison. Fisher has been prominent in first-class tennis in England for many years, while Peacock and Allison are at present visiting England. This team cannot be said to represent, the full strength of this Dominion, and probably will not survive their first match, against Belgium. It is, however, a beginning, and representative teams should follow in future years.
