ATHLETIC SPORTS.

SQUADRON ; RUGBY team.

VICTORY FOR THE SAILORS.

CITY COUNCIL DEFEATED.

A combined Rugby football team from the light cruisers of. the Special Service Bemad ron defeated the City Council second grade fifteen at the Domain yesterday aftersoon by 12 points to 8. after a strenuous Same. characterised throughout by • ft friendly, sporting spirit. Forward play predominated, and the sturdy naval pack held their own against the local players, despite the handicap of proper field practice. ■■ _ A feature of the sailors' play was their fine line-kicking. This greatly helped them In gaining a well-earned victory. At halftimo the Squadron team had scored one try and hod registered two penalty gaols, and were leading by one point, the Council team having scored two tries, one of which ■was converted. The secr,nd spell was very % even. Both tide? made great efforts, to improve their position, but it"was not until near the end of the 'game that the scores were altered Citv Council had the naval team hard pressed, but could not overtake the latter side's narrow lead, for the defence put up h* the sailors proved equal to the occasion. Then a strong et*ack by the Squadron changed the position. A great line kiok Jransferred play to the local team's , terriory, and from a meleo near the line the sailors gained another 4ry, which was not converged. The nnroe shortly afterws r ds withthe scores unchanged. Several Welsh pluveTs from the cruisers wore conspicuous throughout the match. For the winders, Chief Enstinn-room Artificer Evans kicked both penalty goals, and Engine-room Artificer Davies scored both tries. Both these pincers are Wouhmen. LEAGUE TEAMS REVIEWED.

CHANGES AND PROSPECTS.

MATCHES FOR TO-MORROW.

The principal League football match tomorrow will be on No. 1 ground. Carlaw Park, at 3 p.m., when Ponsonby will meet Devonport. Ponsonby has one defeat against it this season, being narrowly beaten by Marists last Saturday, after a hard-fought game. There will perhaps. be a couple oi changes in the team. Grey., whose name appears in the list from which the selectors will make their final choice, would be a decided acquisition. It appeared as though Ponsonby felt the loss of the generalship of their old captain, "Scotty". MoClymont. If he were to take the field the team would be strengthened, and would be the favourites against even such a formidable. aide as Devonport. , The Devonport team fought out a good hard game la=t Saturday against City, the contest ending in a draw. The same team will probably be fielded, and as the game last week was the first Laing and Webb took part in they should show much improved form to-morrow. Devonport has not previously been seen at headquarters this sea--80.!. and its appearanoe will be keenly awaited by enthusiasts. _'~,» . On No. 2 ground, Carlaw Park, Marist Old Boys will bo opposed to Richmond. The latter team trounced Newton last Saturday after a good game, the honours being with the winners. Their back line has . been stiffened by the inclusion of G. Paki ana Hing. It will be a hard nut for Marists to crack to-morrow. Marists will field the brilliant South Auckland five-eighths. L. Stewart, in his own position, first five-eighths. Thi* will ensure the combination of the back line. Sherlock, at wing, threequarter. should improve on his last display, as he has only played one game in the position. The forwards will not be altered. A good open game should result, as both sides will throw the ball about. City, who meet the Ellerslie thirteen at Victoria Park, will not have the services of B. Davidson and Mitchell, who were both injured last Saturday. Grewther will nlay full-back, and will probably be replaced at w>'«e threoquarter by M. McDonald. Flynn will replace Mitchell at half, and Bais will rerr'nce B-. Davidson at centre. The changes in the team are Bound, as City is the be°t combined team in the code, and will not be disturbed by the alterations. Ellerslie are improving, and as they play the kind of game- that is more likely to upset team work—spoiling tactics— the game may not- be as one-sided as it appears on paper. ;.,'-•, Athletics will try conclusions with Newton on Victoria Park. Newton will be without the services of .7. Sprrenson at wing threequarter. who will be replaced by Quintal. If the Newton team win the scrums their baoks may be a bit too speedy for their opponents, but Webb, Avery, and Herring, in the Athletic nock, are brilliant forwards, and will watch Nicholson at half. v"'; Newton are making a good uphill fight, and the best of luck has not been their's this season, but they are showing commendable sporting spirit in all their games. Athletic are . quietly confident _ of gaining premiership honours, and are quickly moulding their side into a good combined whole. Teams for to-morrow are:—

THE NEW ZEALAND LEAGUE.

VISIT OF ENGLISH TEAM.

The New Zealand Rugby League met last evening, Mr. J. Carlaw presiding.

L. Stewart was granted a transfer by the South Auckland League from Athletios Club, Hamilton, to Marist Old Boys, Auckland.

Correspondence was received from the South Auokland League emphatically protesting against the campaign adopted by Auckland clubs in recruiting the best of the South Auckland players for inclusion in Auckland teams.

It was decided to co-operate with the Sports Protection League in its endeavour to have the Government tax on sport withdrawn- Mr. J. S. Dickson, M.P., was empowered to act as delegate on the deputation to wait on the Prime Minister in connection with the matter. ■

The council decided to accept the terms of the Auckland League regarding Carlaw Park, and to play the three matches against the English team there. , Mess--. Houghton, Webster, Phelan. Stirling a.V Powell were appointed a committee to consider the matter of gate oharges, and to report to the next meeting of the council. An itinerary in connection with the tour of the English visitors was forwarded to the manager of the team for approval.

TRANSFER OF PLAYERS.

SOUTH AUCKLAND ATTITUDE. [BX TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT, J HAMILTON, Thursday. Apparently recruiting by the Auckland clubs from the country districts was not favourably regarded by members of the South Auckland Rugby League at its last monthly meeting, when the transfer of L. Stewart (Athletics, Hamilton), to Marist Brothers (Auckland.), was granted. The matter was discussed at some length, and the resolution in favour of the trp-nsfer embodied a strongly worded protest against the practice. It was also intimated that the League would not grant transfers of players under its jurisdiction unless good reasons were ehown. Delegates to the New Zealand Council were entrusted to bring the matter very etronglj before the council.

Messrs. J. J. Herrick and R, T. Hill wer appointed as the League's representatives to the counoil.

BOWLING.
