TOWN BUILDING ERRORS.
"NO FAITH OR VISION.'*
Some thoughtful remarks on towrtjplaQning were made by Archbishop *Jisliu?> , , in a sermpn at the Christchurch Cathedral . last Sunday, when " Municipal Sunday." .. was observed in pursuance of an arrangement made by the Mavor of Christchurch. The Archbishop stated there was a multitude of cities at Home and in New Zealand which were planned without faith and vision, and so were without any possible means of extension. Suburbs had « grown out, ugly and dull, absolutely with- , out beauty* that. made it all the more wonderful'when one thought of-the good ■-£ work done in years cone by by the founders of Christchurch. They ( had done great things, but were the citizens of jo- . day following the same plan? He hardlv thought that- their children had followed in the footsteps of the pioneers for they , had thrown a great deal away; they had lacked the vision. As an example they .j\ mifc'ht take the Sonare outside the. Cathedral. It had offered opportunities of beinc made a thin? of unrivalled beauty, diffnitv, grace, and restfulness, and what had they made of it-?. . "God knows," declared the Archbishop, "the country is suffering from Vjj the work of men who were not experts. , He thought that no local bidy - could govern successfully unless it jruihered in- 5| formation from outside men who were ex- ,;. perts. There were so many artists, men of taste, men of science, who Were trained in particular, directions, whose services ran ,_ to waste. ' '■' •''■' '
