A message from Paris states that as a result of the elections in France M. Poin care's party (the Nationalists), has been . defeated. The Left bloc headed by the 3?V ex-Premier, M, Briand, and M. M. Painf love and Herriott, - control tho majority ii ; , in the Chamber of Deputies. v Those elected include M. Loucheui Minister for' Commerce, M. Daniel Vincent, Minister for Public Health,, am' M. le Trocquer, Minister for Public Works. M. Briand was returned, as alsr wore M. Tardieu and the expelled Minister, M. Malvy. The latter was elected for the Department of Lot. The Paris correspondent of the Daily Express, in an earlier message, expressed the opinion that the chances of M. Poincare obtaining a majority were slender. He added that in all parts of France the r Left candidates headed the polls. z, 1 e - In the course of an election speech, ' 'M. Briand appealed to all and Socialists to unite against the Government National group. Union, he de--1 clared. would bring victory. At 'the same i . hour, M. Pairileve, also a former Premier, was making a similar appeal at Annecy. It is apparent that platform on which the Left Parties mean to fight the elections is one! of -international, solutions :. through the Leagie of Nations as opposed to the' doctrine of force, said an English commentator at the time. Left leaders, like MM. Herriott,, Briand, and Painleve, ; ■ maintain that M. Poincare's policy of military pressure has been weighed in the balance and ; found wanting. New methods, it is claimed are wanted, and -. new methods Require new men. The Left leaders aver that J 4heir policies oi close and cordial inter-Allied co-operation with the extended use of the League of Nations as arbiter rin international disputes: will bestow on France the reparation security she has hitherto failed.to obtain. 1 Si. Charles Danielou, Deputy for Finisterro, a prominent member of the Kepublican.; Left, recently stated in, regard to foreign affairs and the maintenance of the Entente between the Allies:—l am a collaborator of . M. Ari slide Briand, who, as you know, neglected nothing which could help to maintain as close an understanding as possible ; between ;■ the Allies. - I think that such an Entente is a indispensable condition of the .strict execution of '.the Treaty of Versailles. Unhappily, the French people has the impression that it was not supported by the Allies in its legitimate demands, and when M. Poin care was , induced to take forcible measures gainst our recalcitrant debtor—as Mr. Baldwin put it in a recent speech—he was supported' by the whole of French public opinion. We are convinced that with a little goodwill in regard to the execution of the 'treaties,; a more just appreciation of the rights > and interests of all, and above all, recognition of the rebirth of Imperialism in Germany, the Entente between the Allies might still*, be restored in its entirety. - ' - "•" *>' . :.
