The annual conference of the Wellington district of the " Returned Soldiers' 'Association was held on Saturday . evening. There was a fair attendance of delegates. ' d Important discussions centred on a proposal to abolish , the district scheme of organisation, ; delegates expressing the opinion that the district method • was doomed. A : more simple and less expensive • form of organisation was ~ needed. Klt was decided to send a remit to the; Dominion Conference urging abolition of the district scheme as now constituted, ~ and substitution of . a scheme - which would enable the : : work" of {. the association to- be carried on ' with minimum expense, v; . ; The annual report revealed "a . further decrease of . members, - and an increase of expenditure over revenue. ' : The need of; a; home for -. veteran returned men : was -discussed. It was' mentioned that some • men, - now 60 years :of age, < would soon - need assistance. Such a home could -provide treatment for neurasthenia cases, instead of their being sent to mental hospitals. The general opinion of the - meeting was that the time • was not yet opportune; but delegates to the Dominion Conference should keep it in mind. It was : decided to forward a remit urging the Government to have the present legislation in regard to stock mortgages amended. V A - remit from ' the ' Hawera, association, urging the Government to give more aj'inf)athetic consideration to ' soldiers' house oans was not approved, a majority of delegates eulogising the sympathy and consideration shown by -the commissioner of Crown lands.
