GIFTS TO LORD JELLICOE
! A UNIQUE MEMENTO?,. PLAQUE FROM HARBOUR BOARD. •An appropriate and finely-wrought memento of the opening <lf the new Prince's Wharf was presented to the GovernorGeneral, Lord Jellicoe, at the official ceremony yesterday. This was in the form of a plaque in kauri, on which is carved the 100 years of naval history of the Dominion. On the left hand top corner is the 1 carved representation of a Maori war canoe; with an appropriate inscription and the date, 1824. The coat of arms of | the Auckland .Harbour Board is in the top centre, while in the left corner •is H.M.S. Fawn, with the date v 1864. Below is a larger representation of H.M.S. Hood, with a reference to her : visit to Auckland in 1924. The general scheme of decoration includes a moa and a,kiwi as well &3 typical -Maori faces and emblems. The * inscription is as. : follows" Presented to His Excellency the - Governor-General, Viscount Jellicoe of v Scapa, G.C.8., • 0.M., / G.O.VX)., on the occasion of the opening .of Prince » Wharf, Auckland, New Zealand, 12th i chairman, in presenting tho. plaque, said it was the gift of the members and staff of the board. He hoped the plaque would serve as a happy reminder of. the years Lord Jellicoe had spent m the Dominion. Mr. Mackenzie also presented to Lord Jellicoe a walking stick made entirely of New Zealand ' woods, obtained from the * board's forest .reserves, and fashioned by members of the board's S ln reply, the Governor-General said that while he greatly appreciated the gifts,, he would neiid no - reminder of the many happy days he had spent in Auckland. Walking sticks, also of New ZealandWoods, were presented to Vice-Admiral ■ Sir Frederick Field and Rear-Admiral Sir Hubert Brand.
