Burns, whose activities have been the storm centre of several Senate investigations, : has resigned the position of Chief of the Justice Department's Bureau of. Investigation. He was selected for the post three years ago by-the then Attorney-General, Mr. H. M. Daugherty. The • famous detective has borne the brunt of much .; of the criticism ; which has been levelled at the administration of Mr. Daugherty. ~;. ) Mr. Burns attributes his resignation to illness. He says he had been planning to resign for some time but Mr. Daugherty would not permit him to do so. After the latter's resignation he felt "he should remain for a while in order to, cooperate, with ,the. new Attorney-General, i Mr. ,H. F. Stone. The latter has accepted the resignation, which terminates 25 years of service in the department. The retiring chief of the investigation bureau has been much, criticised •;:, since Mr. Daugherty's resignation, especially because he admitted discussing with Mr. Daugherty a plan by means •' of which three -Government agents were sent to Montana to secure the indictment against Senator Wheeler, whereas Mr. Daugherty had professed ignorance of the- matter. 1 Further disclosures as to laxity' in the enforcement of the law 'created a profound distrust which was only to be appeased by the resignation of responsible officials of the Justice Department.
