MOUNT EDEN and CITY.
AMALGAMATION opposed. RATEPAYERS' "RESOLUTION. "REFRAIN FROM MARRIAGE." The question of the amalgamation of Mount Eden Borough with the City of Auckland was . discussed 'at a public meeting held an the : Dominion Road Methodist schoolroom - last evening. The •Mayor, Mr. .E. H. Potter, presided. The meeting was unanimous in opposition to amalgamation, arguments .against union being advanced by Messrs. Potter, A: M: • Bryden, L. JoLl, 'E. M. Morison, G. L. Taylor, and several speakers from the audience. Mr. Potter said the argument that - union in municipal matters spelt progress /did not square with experience in England, where in 1899 an Act was passed allowing for devolution. The chief or county authority, as in London, was responsible for the main services, while boroughs were formed within the county to administer local services. This case, Mr. Potter contended, .applied to the relations between Mount Eden and the city, the latter administering such services as water supply, drainage and tramways, leaving local problems to be solved by those with, a close knowledge of local -conditions. . , A motion was carried "That, seeing a divorce is impossible to obtain, the Borough of Mount Eden rofrain from entering into marriage with the City of Auckland." A meeting convened by supporters of amalgamation will be held in the schoolroom this evening.
