POSITION OF THE FUND. rBY TELEGRAPH. CORRESPONDENT.] TAURANGA. Friday. At a meeting of the Harbour Board the following letter was read from Mr. .F. W. Wild, hon.' secretary of the Hemes Memorial Fund, Te Aroha: — -1 : "Replies have now been received from most of the local bodies throughout me Tauranga ■ electorate. > The amounts promised total about £225, to which i must be added the Government subsidy of £1 for £1 up to £250. Several : local bodies have promised their donations conditional on the memorial being erected in the town of Te Aroha. At a meeting ot delegates recently held it was agreed that to erect a fitting monument in that town something like £1000 would be required. With £500 already in sig&t an imposing memorial could be placed over the grave in the Te Aroha cemetery. I. have been again instructed to approach your board with a ; view to finding out which type of memorial it would Tpreier, that is, a statue or something similar in j the town or a monument over the grave. Should you prefer' the . town memorial, would your board consider the doubling or trebling of its proposed contribution?" The board had - previously donated ten guineas and agreed that -an additional sum of ten guineas be donated fo««ra a, statue in the town, in place of one over th© grave, if such is decided upon, provided that the other local- bodies in ter'ested ;? contribute ;an equal amount : in addition to the amounts already promised. ] A similar letter was considered by the County Council to-day. It. was, resolved' to • reply that : the council regretted • its inability, to increase its previous contribution of £25. , •
