I At the meeting of the.Thames .Borough \ Council on Monday -communications were - received c from the Thames i County Council • with' reference to .the' Kauaeranga Bridge • and the Kopu ferry to. the effect that both' l matters required urgent attention, i With : regard to the bridge, the' letter pointed out that - the old bridge was becoming unsafe for traffic and required con--1 siderable and ' immediate repairs, f and it i was suggested that the Borough Council l should assume control, as the county would , hav« hut little interest in the bridge when ; the'new' structure was finished. - -ry •In regard to th© Kopu feijry, the County ? Council pointed out that • the present 1 : launch :■■ Orongo had completely broken 1 down, and had ■ been discarded. Tho 1 ; council was"; at . present , hiring '-another ) launch, but a new one "was necessary, i The ' Borough • Council was asked to provide a > share of the cost of purchase., ; : Failing 1 any agreement being arrived at • between 5 the two bodies, tho County; Council would 7 be compelled to close the ferry fat; the end of the month. > , ' ' \ b Discussing the letters, the: Mayor said J the new : launch would ;necessitate a ! con- ' tribution of £217 from the borough. The 3 ferry was running at a profit, but no i money was in hand for .reinstatement. 5 The launch would be required for at least 3 three years. In regard to the- Kauaeranga Bridge, he produced the engineer's esti--5 mate, showing that the renewal of the f whole structure would cost £2400. To reconstruct a bridge of 9ft. in width would require £1400. - , .It was • agreed that both matters were . urgent. ; A special meeting will be - held 1 to go fully into the position.
