RAVAGES OF THE DEER.
OPEN SEASON ADVOCATED.
"HUGE ECONOMIC WASTE." [BY telegraph.—press ASSOCIATION.] - WELLINGTON, Wednesday. An open season for deer was advocated by Mr. Press, a member of the Rotary Club, in an address to-day. Though 1000 to 2000 deer were shot every "year, he said, the numbers were increasing, and immense damage was being • done. The fact that venison could not be sold resulted in huge economic waste. The hides could be turned to good account. Somo beautiful skins had been cured. Thev could be used for rugs and other purposes. The time has arrived, ' said Mr. Press, when the Government should .do away with licenses in certain areas, throwing them open for deer to be shot, the meat be put on the market and somo use made of the skins.
Mr. Mcintosh Ellis, director of forestry, said there were 300,000 doer in New Zealand. They were increasing rapidly and doing enormous damage.
