FOOTBALL. ' * • ■ ■ * *~~—• ■'. ■ ■■■■■ ;■

UNDER LEAGUE RULES. PLAYERS FOE . '. TO-MORROW. REVIEW OF THE. TEAMS. • Marist -v. City will ;be the main feature of the i League matches at Carlaw Park tomorrow afternoon. ;. .. The* City team is altered very little from that which took the field last Saturday, and so decisively defeated Newton. H. McDonald will replace Thomas, who *was in- . jured i last Saturday. With Townsend, Reed and McDonald in the front row and Hawkes, Mackie and Bass behind, the pack should be as-, formidable as in v the- past. The back row unaltered, leaves ■ the Mitchell to Flyhn 'chain complete. Marists will strengthen their pack by the inclusion of T. Casey and A. Nelson. The Marist back' line is "nippy." and with , a strengthened pack to support them this team on paper appears City's most " formidable opponents. A good, open and fast game should result.

Devonport will ploy their first game on their own ground. They will be opposed to the promising Ellerslie team, which is practically the same as thr.t which opposed Muriate last Saturday. .

Should Elleralie be » little moid enterprising and open the play, the North Snore tes,m will find them a very hard nut to crack.

As the North Shore team will be without the services of their star threeauarter, S. Webb, wao is out of town, ana may not have their old loader, Bert iiamg. they will be hard pressed to put in a team equal to stemming the vigorous rush of the new Eilershe team. 3. Laiag, a brother of Bert, will be in the Mortis Shore pack. Yoimg.. hefty and fast, he should be a decided acquisition. Patterson, a most promising young junior duck, weighing 13st., and C. Hand, the Shore's champion place-kicker, will probably take the held, and , will. stiffen the team. Enthusiasts are anxiously awaiting the result of the Shore team's first effort. ' Richmond were deoidsdly unlucky in the match against Athletic last Saturday. They will be the- better lor the game, as will the Mangere team, in which there .are some promising players. These teams are very even and a good, entertaining game should result. . ■'». ■'■v.- * i Newton will require to show better . back form to have a winning chance against Ponsonby, who are a very evenly balanced combination requiring only a couple of games to effect a wonderful . improvement. Newton are changing their back line, placing A. • .Watson— year's senior— the wing and bringing - Sorrenson to threequarter; Warren first five-eighth, and Callaghan second five-eighth. Xneee changes will make a great difference, although the fiveeighths line is still weak on last weeks showing. The selectors are to be complimented, however, on being courageous enough to sift their junior material for possible senior champions. The game will be by ho . means ,- one-sided, even against the improving Panscnby team. The teams are as follow: —

The first representative Rugby match of the season, Waikato v. Auckland, will take place at Eden Park ; to-morrow, : and should provide an interesting afternoon's sport. In view of the i impending tour of ' the All Blacks to England this year, exceptional interest attaches to all provincial matches, an dthe fact that such an early start has been made with representative fixtures will afford Auckland .players every opportunity of distinguishing themselves on the field. The , Waikato team is reported to be a strong combination, and the game should be a keen contest. Last season the Waikato had a very good record, and defeated the Wellington : representatives. ' The Auckland team can be depended on to C give a bright and attractive display of football if weather i conditions are favourable. Only players eligible for selection for the English tour have been chosen. Included in the team are only three ■ players who ' did not play in , Auckland last, season. They "are L. McLean, who now plays for Grammar Old Boys; Xirwin, who played for Hawke's Bay last season ana is now captain of the Auckland ' Marist : team; ■ and Emerson, a North Auckland player. It is doubtful if the last-named will be available tomorrow. .; With the exception of V. Badeley, who did' not play last Saturday, all players have shown good form this season. '.\ ALL BLACK TRIALS.
