"Keen interest is being taken in the Labour Government's first Budget, which Mr. Philip Sriowder., Chancellor of the Exchequer, who has Wen described as the man with the sweet smile and bitter tongue," delivers in the House of Commons on Tuesday. Six ex-Chancellors of the Exchequer are expected to be present, nameH-, Messrs. H. IT. A&qnith, Lloyd George, Stanley Baldwin, Sir R. S. Home, and N. and A. Chamberlain. It is confidently predicted that Mr. Snowden will take Id off sugar. 2d of tea, and reduce the entertainment tax on cheaper seats. He is also expected to remove the restrictions und*r which lower old-age pensions are paid to persons posgossing small savings. Despite the surplus of £48,000,000 in the 1323-2:4 Budget, these remissions wild necessitate obtaining additional revenue. It is predicted that Mr. Snowde;i will increase the duties and supertar. on large incomes. Beyond eighth- increasing the burdens cJ.Uie rich and slightly lessening the burdens of the masses, the Budget is not exited to embody a Socialist programme for which the Government has not the necessary majority.
