COOK ISLANDS SERVICE

PROTEST AGAINST CHANGE. AUCKLAND INDUSTRIALISTS The change in the Cook Island steamer service is viewed with alarm by the Auckland Industrial Association. The president, Mr. J. A. C. Allum, stated at a meeting of the association's executive yesterday that though the main agitation against- the change had come from the fruit importers, the matter also affected the exporters very materially. Over 100 Auckland men were employed solely in preparing meat for export for the Islands, and if the steamers were to leave from Wellington the entire trade would go to Australia or the United States, as it could not be handled from the South. It was decided that a telegram be sent to the Government expressing alarm at the possibility of a change, which might result in the already inadequate service being still, further reduced, and requesting that the present service, augmented by a more suitable steamer, be retained.
