TRAINS ON SOME SECTIONS.
WEAR AND TEAR OF ROADS. SPECIAL GANGS FOR REPAIRS. INTIMIDATION IN CHRISTCHURCH. The strike situation underwent no change in Auckland, yesterday. An attempt to run a suburban train during the afternoon failed at the last moment. A train ran from Whangarei to Opua and back, - while a number of ** skeleton " services were successfully carried out on some Southern sections. Instructions have been issued by the Public Works Department to the various districts to arrange for special maintenance work on the roads now bearing the brunt of the abnormal motor traffic. District engineers have been authorised to engage special labour and to requisition the necessary money for the purpose. As was anticipated the Hikurangi mines were compelled to close down yeaterday owing to a shortage of trucks. , Cargo operations on some of the steamers in port are being inter, fered with to 3ome extent owing to a lack of trucks, but the outlook is not yet in any way serious. It is reported that intimidation has been resorted to in Christchurch. Two loyal workers were stoned by a band of women there, and one was injured. Cither methods have also been employed with 8 view to preventing any men from working. The Railway Officers' Executive considered their position in relation to the strike in Wellington yesterday, and decided to impress upon members the need for strict neutrality.
