A SERIOUS POSITION.
FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE. EPIDEMIC IN AMERICA. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Becd. 7.65 p.m.) WASHINGTON. April 22. The foot and mouth epidemic has become a matter of great seriousness throughout the United States. The New York State has joined with various other States in declaring quarantines against California. During the 1914 epidemic New York State lost cattle valued at £100,000. The President, Mr. Calvin Coolidgo, lias asked the Western States to meet in conference and devise means of staying the spread of the disease. An element of panic in the various communities near the centres of infection is clearly evidenced by the appeals to Mr. J. W. Weeks, Secretary for War, to send troops to enforce the California-Arizona embargo. Mr. Weeks declares that use of force for this purpose would be illegal. The Department for the Interior is considering the transference of large bodies of cattle from the danger zones to National parks. A chemical warfare service has been striving to develop medicinal remedies, and announcements are made that chlorine gas, which has been found effective in respiratory diseases and animal distemper, may prove successful.
