PAYING THE HIGHWAYS.

SECONDARY STREETS WORK. NEW LOAN PROPOSED. THE COUNCIL'S PROGRAMME. A new loan, to cover the cost of paving a number of secondary streets not yet provided for, was proposed by the Maylpr, Mr. J. H. Gunson, last evening, when submitting to the City Council the estimates for the current financial year. In view of the rapid growth of Auckland, said Mr. Gunson, it did not appear justifiable to delay or even await the completion this year of the present restricted secondary street programme. It was quito impossible to do constructural work to any degree out of revenue, but while it was obviously impossible to immediately cope 'with th?) entire problem of secondary streets, /.nuch should be done toward its solution. On the recommendation of the Mayor, the city engineer was instructed to report upon a further forward policy in permanent construction, with a view to submitting a further comprehensive programme to the ratepayers. Thero are now 17 miles of concrete roads in the Auckland City and suburban area. This paving scheme is to be continued, and for the current financial year the following areas of concrete are to be laid: Market Place 4714 square yards, Customs Street West (remainder) 5760, Sturdee Street 4868, Hobson Street (lower to Prince's Wharf) 3000, Albert Street, Quay Street, to Wellesley Street, 10,964. Next in order will come : Fort Street Lane 760 square yards, High Street 2710, Chancery Street 1094, Mills Lane 1477, Fanshawe Street to Halsey Street 12,126, Halsey Street to Patteson Street 3887, The Strand 7062, Remuera Road 11,073. These will be followed by Federal Street, Victoria Street West and Wyndham Street, with a total of 6700 square yards. Last year the council staff laid 47,207 square yards of concrete so that in order to complete the above programme of 75,195 square yards this year the work will have to be speeded up. Arrangements for the necessary plant and materir Is are now being made.
