LAST STRIKE RECALLED.
DURING PRINCES VISIT. The last railway strike, took effect at midnight on April 27, 1920, during the Prince of Wales' visit to Auckland. On this occasion the announcement was made by the executive of the Locomotive Enginedrivers, Firemen, and Cleaners' Association in Wellington on April 27, and the members of that organisation employed at the Auckland station and yaras ceased work at midnight. The men demanded higher wages and improved condi- ; tions. On April 28 the A.S.R.S. in the North Island joined the strikers, partly in sympathy and partly because its request for a hearing under the Labour Disputes Investigation Act was not acceded to. The Prime Minister, Mr. W. F. Massey, immediately met the executive of the locoj motive men and a settlement was I arrived at on May 2. Trains resumed I running next day.' It was agreed that a I special conciliation committee be set up to I consider the executive's dispute and that j the provisions of the Labour Disputes Investigation Act be taken advantage of in regard to the A.SJR.S*""
