COLLAPSE OF A BRIDGE.
YIELDS UNDER HEAVY LOAD WAIMAUKU DRIVER'S ESCAPE. GETS OVER JUST IN TIME. SETTLERS NOW ISOLATED. [BI TELEGRAPH.OWN COBRESPONDEOT-1 ' WAIMAtrKU. Monday. To be actually on a bridge when the stringers gave way was the thrilling experience of the cream carter on the Waimauku-Ararimu road on Saturday. The man was crossing the Waikoukon bridge, a structure with a span of 52ft. and standing 30ft. high, driving a threehorse team with nearly a ton of cream on the waggon when the bridge began to , ( crack and fall. He urged his horses strongly, and just managed to get clear boifore the stringers broke and the bridge sagged 18in. Onlookers were horrified to think what might have happened had the driver not been able to get clear as he did. The bridge is about 25 years old, constructed of wood, and the recent floods no doubt hastened its end. It is quite beyond repair, and a temporary bridge will have to be built for immediate use, as many settlers are now isolated. The bridge is hanging by on© stringer only, and in all possibility will shortly ' fall into the river.
