ACCIDENTS IN LONDON.
HEAVY TOLL FOR YEAR. "A melancholy year in the history of London's street accidents, the number of which, to persons and property, has increased to the appalling total of j69,813." This was bow Mr. E. H. Blain described the year 1923 in a statement made to the London Bafety First Council, of which he is chairman. , The number of accidents for 1923 showed an increase of 22 per cent, over the total of 1922, and 130 per cent, over that of 1918. The following comparison was made between the numbers of fatal accident* in London and New York: No. per Million Total, of Population. London, 1923 ... 667 86 New York, 1922 ... 964 . 175 There are, however, 300,000 motor vehicles in New York, as against 100,000 in London, while New York has only half the area. ''If greater measures are not taken," said Mr. B!ain, "there is a likelihood of London attaining New . York's example of nearly 1000 killed annually." Of the fatal accident figures given, over one-third are children.
