IMPORTATION OF CHAFF.

FARMERS WANT A DUTY. SHIPMENTS FROM AUSTRALIA [Et TELEGRAPH. — CORRESPONDENT.] BLENHEIM. Tuesday. A discussion took place at a meeting of the Marlborough Provincial Executive of the Farmers' Union yesterday on the subject of Australian imported chaff, which members of the executive had had an opportunity of inspecting at one of the produce stores at Blenheim. It was i stated that the chaff which came from Australia in sacks was well cut and of fair sample, but the pressed chaff was what Marlborough graders would consider a second quality article. The chairman, Mr. W. M. Smith, said there should be a duty on the imported chaff, and moved that it be remit to the Dominion executive urging that the Government impose a duty. The motion was carried unanimously.

Mr. F. Lissaman said it had come under Jus notice that chart was not always cut as it should be. He had been struck with the excellence of the Australian cutting, which was more perfect than was ever the case in Marlborough. He understood that very often the knives were not changed before 80 bags had been cut. After cutting 25 bags they needed attention if good results were to be secured. No action was taken, the matter being in the hands of the farmer.
