LONDON. Mar. 19.
The poll in tho by-election for the Abbey division of Westminster was taken to-day. The votes will be counted tomorrow.
The polling excelled that of any byelection in the City of London in living memory. The Strand, Regent Street and Parliament Street were crowded with motor-cars decked with the ribbons of the four candidates, who each made immense efforts to poll every available vote.
Mr. Winston Churchill alone had 266 cars at his service. One of his supporters came from Cannes and another from Italy. Mr. Stanley Baldwin, the ex-Prime Minister, Mr. Arthur Henderson and his two sons, Mr. Philip Snowden, and Miss Margaret Bondfield were among the voters.
Mr. Churchill twice toured the constituency at the head of a motor procession, every car sounding its syren continuously, and his partisans with megaphones crying: "Winston will win." The supporters of the Conservative candidate, Mr. Nicholson, anticipate a majority of 2000. Tho Labour candidate says he may slip in owing to the Conservative split, but that he will be satisfied if Mr. Churchill is kept out.
The four candidates in tho by-election for the Abbey division of Westminster are: Mr. Nicholson, Conservative Mr. Winston Churchill, Independent; Mr. Scott Duckers, Liberal; and Mr. Fenner Brockway, Labour.
