When : 'tit.. A false step and a . fall when crossing a river on a log saved Mr. Flint's life," but' the policeman in front of him received the blow from a tomahawk on, the neck, and his head' was almost severed. Two other police were wounded«in the affray, and the assailants escaped.•, When the news reached headquarters a police camp was organised: , and established in the district for the purpose of * •: arresting the natives concerned. After . . six months' constant travelling in 1 very v rough country, the party succeeded in arresting those who were principally con-, cerned in the attack upon Mr. Flint and his men. The prisoners "were tried by Judge Murray in December last. Three were convicted of murder and' sentenced to death, and two. were convicted of an attempt to commit murder, arid were sentenced to seven, years' imprisonment with hard labour.
